Make an image background transparent

Frequently asked questions

What does a transparent background actually mean?

Every pixel of a PNG has an alpha value, from fully opaque to fully transparent. The tool makes the background pixels fully transparent and gives the edge pixels partial transparency, so the subject blends smoothly into whatever it is placed on.

Why does the background look like a checkerboard?

The gray-and-white checkerboard is how editors show transparency on screen. It is not part of the file: once you place the PNG on a page or in a design, the color underneath shows through.

PNG or WebP?

Both keep transparency. PNG works everywhere, including older software and print workflows; WebP files are usually much smaller and suit websites. If you need yet another format, open the result in AdScaled Converter.

Does the output contain my EXIF data?

No. The file is rebuilt from pixels, so camera data, GPS location and other metadata are not copied. The EXIF orientation is applied first, so the picture is not rotated by mistake.
