Remove URLs from text

Finds web addresses that start with http://, https://, ftp:// or www. and deletes them or replaces them with text of your choice. Periods and brackets around a link stay.

How it works

  1. Paste the text or load a text file.
  2. Leave the replacement empty or type text such as [link].
  3. Copy the result or download it as a .txt file.

Works well for

  • Chat logs, comments and posts full of links
  • Links followed by a period, comma or closing bracket – the punctuation stays
  • Addresses with brackets in the path, such as Wikipedia links
  • Replacing each link with a placeholder so the sentence still reads

Limitations

  • Bare domains without http or www (example.com) are not removed – too easily confused with file names.
  • In Markdown links only the address goes; the link text and brackets stay.
  • E-mail addresses are not URLs – use Remove e-mails and phone numbers for them.

Which links are recognised?

Addresses that start with http://, https://, ftp://, ftps://, sftp:// or www. Bare domains such as example.com are left alone on purpose.

Is the period at the end of a sentence removed?

No. Trailing punctuation and unmatched closing brackets are not treated as part of the address.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The links are found and removed in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

Is there a size limit?

Up to 1 MB of text without an account, 2 MB with a free account and 10 MB with Pro.
