Remove accents and diacritics

Strips accents, háčeks, umlauts and other diacritics from Latin and Greek letters and leaves plain base letters. Useful wherever only plain letters are accepted.

How it works

  1. Paste the text or load a text file.
  2. Add other cleanups if needed, for example punctuation.
  3. Copy the result or download it as a .txt file.

Works well for

  • French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Czech, Slovak, Polish, Nordic, Romanian, Turkish and Vietnamese text
  • File names, URL slugs, user names and IDs that must be plain letters
  • Systems that break on diacritics, such as old databases or SMS gateways
  • Letters without a separate accent: ß → ss, æ → ae, œ → oe, ø → o, ł → l

Limitations

  • Words can lose their meaning without the marks (Czech “byt” vs “být”, French “ou” vs “où”).
  • Cyrillic is left as it is: й and ё are separate letters, and stress marks in Russian text stay.
  • Other scripts (Arabic, Hebrew, Devanagari, Thai…) are not changed, and neither are quotes, dashes or symbols.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to ß, ø, æ or ł?

They have no accent to strip, so they get their usual plain spelling: ß → ss, æ → ae, œ → oe, ø → o, ł → l, đ → d.

Does it work for Russian or Greek text?

Greek accents are removed. Cyrillic text is not changed, because letters such as й and ё are separate letters and not accented versions of и and е.

Are upper-case letters kept?

Yes. Only the diacritics are removed; letter case, spaces, punctuation and emojis stay unchanged.
