Remove metadata from Word, Excel and PowerPoint files

Office documents remember who wrote them, who saved them last, the company, the template and the total editing time. See it all and download a copy without it – the content itself is not changed.

How it works

  1. Drop DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODT, ODS or ODP files.
  2. Review the properties found: author, last modified by, dates, company, custom fields.
  3. Download the cleaned documents.

Works well for

  • Contracts, offers and CVs you send outside the company: author, last modified by, company and manager are removed.
  • Dates and history: created and modified dates, last printed, revision number, total editing time and the template.
  • Custom properties added by document management systems, and the preview thumbnail saved inside the file.
  • Hidden traces of people: comment authors are renamed to a neutral “Author” and Excel’s local folder path is removed.

Limitations

  • Comments and tracked changes themselves are not deleted. In DOCX files the author names of tracked changes stay in the text – accept or reject all changes in Word first.
  • Pictures inside the document are copied unchanged, so photos can still carry their own EXIF data.
  • Old binary formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt) and password-protected documents are not supported.
  • Hidden rows, sheets and text, speaker notes and the application name and version are left as they are.

Frequently asked questions

Which properties are removed?

In DOCX, XLSX and PPTX: all core properties except the language (title, subject, author, keywords, description, last modified by, revision, dates, category, status), company, manager, hyperlink base, total editing time, template, all custom properties and the thumbnail. In ODT, ODS and ODP: authors, dates, editing cycles and time, generator, print data, template, title, subject, keywords, user-defined fields and the printer name.

Does the document content change?

No. Text, tables, slides, formatting and images are copied with identical content; only the metadata parts are edited. The file is re-packed, so its size can differ slightly.

Are comments and tracked changes removed?

No. Comments stay – only their author names are replaced with “Author”. Tracked changes stay too; in OpenDocument files their authors are renamed, in DOCX files they are listed but not rewritten. Delete comments and accept or reject changes in Word or LibreOffice before cleaning.

Is the document uploaded?

No. The file is unpacked, cleaned and packed again in your browser and never leaves your device. Only the paid HTTP API for Pro users processes files on our server.
